How do you feel about your music making the rounds via bittorrent?

 Here's an excerpt from a recent email exchange...

I lament that fact that a person can be so inconsiderate that they would take another person's hard work that they've spent over a year putting huge amounts of time and effort into creating and then blithely upload it to the net for free public download. 

Though I find this highly inconsiderate and very annoying, I can overlook it - but only just about.  I usually justify it to myself by thinking that it's probably some kid who doesn't know any better. That's one thing.

On the other hand, what's worse and what I find totally and completely out of order, is that my albums are up for sale on numerous websites (mainly Russian sites) within days of them being released, without my permission and without me ever seeing any of the money.

So these people are using my work to generate income for themselves. I cannot see this as anything other than theft pure and simple.

Problem for me is that unlike most of today's Psy producers I've been making music long enough to know how it used to be.

Back in the the day I used to have two roughly equal income streams, one from record royalties and sales of CD and vinyl and one from live playing.  The record income has now disappeared almost completely.  I end up playing a lot more gigs these days as a result.  So no doubt, from my point of view the situation used to be much better.

But times change, and I prefer to look for the opportunities offered in the new situation such as promotion and distributing online content rather than looking back (otherwise it would drive me nuts :)

I can see that, because you are just starting out.  The net does offer great opportunities for promotion and accessing a market - especially if you harness people's apparent lack of virtue and give them something for free and get them hooked into using your software, then charge for the full version or upgrades.

But in my case I already had a career that I was happy with which I'd slowly built up through years of hard work, learning music, paying my dues by playing is bands for years, then eventually scraping cash together to buy a small studio then making dance music, playing tours and releasing records. So for me the impact has been overwhelmingly negative.

I also like to mention that all the software and plug-ins that I use for making music I've bought and paid for. I recognize that I am definitely one of the odd ones out among my contemporaries though.

Again, I used to remember how much all this stuff used cost to buy as hardware (because I used to have to buy it )  I am still amazed at how cheap and how incredibly powerful the digital tools and this technology is.

I do use occasionally cracks to evaluate when there is not a demo available though I give myself two weeks sharp. if I like it, it gets put on the list to buy (in the near future). If not, it gets un-installed. Simple as that. That's a discipline I impose upon myself.

I also have a lot of respect for anyone that can sit down and create such powerful and useful tools out of lines of code.  I have absolutely no idea of what goes on inside a computer chip, so to me it is magic or voodoo.  I also know it's take incredible patience, dedication and huge amounts of time and work and I'm grateful, therefore I'm happy to recognize and reward (with money) the hard work of those that create the tools I work with to create music.

Yes, but I think by online distribution only.  It just isn't financially viable to re-press cd's. as reduction of demand for cd's is ongoing.  Probably a good idea to re-issue CDs for Classical or Frank Sinatra records etc, as the target demographic are used to having a physical object as a medium, but not for something with such a short shelf life and relatively small demand as Psytrance listened to by the digital generation.

Sadly I've just found that my online tuition package is available for download on a bit torrent site. This is after 37 sales.

So one of those 37 people must have considered that it was a good idea to upload it to a bit torrent site.

Aside from the inconsideration, I also don't understand the logic of why they would pay money to get a comparative advantage over other psy-producers, only to then shoot themselves in the foot by giving that advantage away free to every producer on the planet by uploading it to the net i.e they rip themselves off too.

The point of me posting this (other than to rant about the lack of integrity of some people) is that I really am interested in providing a good and valuable service to those out there that would like some good advice on music production. I am happy to provide this but it takes me time and money to prepare and therefore I expect people to pay me for my work.
